Prevention is key in shielding children from gun violence

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting rampage that claimed the lives of 20 children and their teachers in Newtown, Conn., could have been prevented if specific measures were taken, such as the re-institution of the ban on assault weapons, pediatricians Judith and Sean Palfrey write. They also called for more licensure and certification of gun owners, restrictions on children's access to violent TV programs or video games, and improved access to mental health services.
