Philadelphia continues award-winning GIS practices

Philadelphia began gathering GIS information in the early 1990s and now boasts one of the best city-mapping systems, winning an unprecedented two Esri President's Awards. Jim Querry, head of the city's geospatial information systems group, says the group pools data from other agencies and shares it to help improve day-to-day public services. The city's GIS use has evolved over the years, shifting from a model where GIS tools were concentrated in a few hands to today's model, in which the tools are widely available, allowing for a greater focus on business practices.
