Gigabit Wi-Fi will move closer to reality this year

Equipment-makers are eagerly preparing for the introduction of next-generation Wi-Fi, with a number of components already capable of supporting the gigabit speeds that the pending 802.11ac standard promises. Ratification of the IEEE protocol is expected by early 2014 at the latest, and the Wi-Fi Alliance is readying beta testing of the technology -- which will support as much as four times the throughput of current networks. Experts say carriers will likely introduce gigabit service in high-density areas before moving on to enterprise-based applications.
