"Wendi Deng" hoax undercuts Twitter's Verified Account system

A Twitter account purporting to be penned by Rupert Murdoch's wife, Wendi Deng, was actually written by an impostor, even though its "authenticity" was confirmed by Twitter. The account was mistakenly issued with Twitter's "Verified Account" logo, with the confusion being resolved only after the account owner confessed. "If Twitter users can't trust that the accounts of notable people and organizations they are interacting with are authentic, what else on the site can't they trust?," Carl Franzen writes.
