Research shows that city dwellers often are unable to correctly identify the names of the neighborhoods in which they live and accurately mark their boundaries. To create a greater sense of connectedness, some attempts have been made to enhance neighborhood identities in cities such as Indianapolis. In some cases, neighborhood nomenclature can have far-reaching effects. "People take it incredibly personally and get very worked up (about the naming of these neighborhoods)," said University of Chicago sociologist Gordon Douglas.
