NBCT: Using conversation in math lessons

National Board Certified Teacher Marsha Ratzel uses a method known as "mathematical discourse" to teach her middle-school students in Kansas. Students offer a conjecture and then hold conversations, in which the goal is to exchange and test their ideas. Now, Ratzel writes, discourse has become routine, and she acts more as a coach, occasionally asking questions and helping students work through the problems.
