A New York Times article that links U.S. ethanol use with rising corn and food prices in Guatemala contains several inaccuracies, writes Geoff Cooper, vice president of research and analysis for the Renewable Fuels Association. Guatemalans use white corn for tortillas, while U.S. ethanol is made from No. 2 yellow corn, Cooper writes, pointing out that it is "disingenuous to suggest stronger demand and tighter supplies of No. 2 yellow corn in the U.S. are significantly influencing local white corn prices in Guatemala." Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization show that Guatemala's food price index rose more slowly in 2012 than in 2011 and 2010, while the country's corn output grew consistently in the past five years, Cooper notes.
