The number of Peruvians living on less than $2 a day has fallen by half, to about 28%, over the past decade, and the government aims to reduce the rate to 15% by 2015. The country has recorded 38 consecutive months of economic expansion -- fueled by consumer spending bolstered by accessible bank loans and credit cards.
