Railroads emerge as permanent solution for crude oil shipments

Canadian Pacific's involvement in a five-year crude oil transportation deal with Global Partners and Phillips 66, along with BNSF's skyrocketing shipments of petroleum products, indicate that rail is turning into a full-time option for petroleum shipments. "Rail has proven itself to be a very efficient mode of transport with certainty around delivery," said Eric Slifka, Global Partners president and CEO. Around 400,000 barrels per day were hauled by rail from the Bakken region last year, according to the Association of American Railroads.
