FiOS, others embrace smart-TV links without boxes

The disappearing set-top box has been a major theme at a consumer-electronics event this week as Samsung Electronics led the way with a plan to provide pay-TV and video-on-demand channels through connected television sets that it will deliver this year. Verizon Communications' FiOS TV is among four multichannel services that will link up with Samsung by offering the same 26 channels that are available to subscribers via Microsoft's Xbox as part of Verizon's "Flex View" TV Everywhere platform. Also, more details emerged about a similar service that LG Electronics will provide to FiOS subscribers through its smart TVs and Blu-ray players.
