Why can't Microsoft out-innovate Apple?

When it comes to patents filed, Microsoft beats Apple hands down,yet the Cupertino crew consistently out-innovates its Redmond rivals, writes Preston Gralla. The key difference is the two companies' corporate cultures: Apple prizes innovation, while Microsoft tends to see its research efforts fall to infighting. "Microsoft's [culture] includes more than its share of turf-protecting, and that's no way to innovate," Gralla writes.
