USDA discovery could lead to vaccine for foot-and-mouth

Scientists at the Department of Agriculture have made a discovery that could eventually lead to a vaccine for the highly contagious and often deadly foot-and-mouth disease, a virus that affects cloven-hoofed animals. The USDA research revealed that the infection starts when the virus infects epithelial cells at the back of a cow's throat.
