Report: Spending on food boosted Canada's holiday sales

Debit- and credit-card purchases in Canada rose 5.8% in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010, driven largely by increases at grocery stores and restaurants, according to payment processor Moneris Solutions. The numbers indicate a better-than-expected holiday season, the company says, despite reports of less-than-stellar sales by some individual merchants.
