N.Y. utilities plan offshore wind farm for Rockaway coast

A coalition of New York utilities is advancing a plan to build a wind farm roughly 13 miles off the Rockaway coast -- much of which was devastated in October by Superstorm Sandy -- in the hopes of generating an additional 350 to 700 megawatts of renewable power. If it succeeds in doing so, the Long Island-New York City Offshore Wind Project -- which recently cleared its first regulatory hurdle with the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement -- would represent the third offshore wind-energy lease granted by the feds and the only one in operation.
