Holiday sales in U.S. post surprise gain, retail group says

Retail sales in the U.S. during the holiday season gained 1.1% compared with the 2008 period, according to the National Retail Federation. The figure is based on combined sales for November and December. Analysts had forecast a decline. Given the country's double-digit unemployment, the increase is unlikely to continue, the retail group said.
