NRC is receptive to industry's new safety plan for reactors

The U.S. nuclear industry's proposal to install emergency pumps and generators at nuclear facilities contains "features that we believe will serve to mitigate" damage from natural disasters, said Martin Virgilio, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's deputy executive director for reactor and preparedness programs. The strategy "is really focused on the prevention of core damage," said Tony Pietrangelo, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer at the Nuclear Energy Institute. Nuclear plant operators could start taking steps to enact the plan by mid-2012 with the NRC's approval, Pietrangelo added.
