IEEE approves new short-range Wi-Fi standard

The IEEE has approved an ultrafast, short-range Wi-Fi standard that supports data transmission speeds of 7 Gbps using bandwidth in the 60 GHz frequency. The 802.11ad standard, dubbed WiGig, is being touted as a supplement to Wi-Fi that would provide high-speed connectivity at short distances between compatible devices.
