La. education board panel alters rule on high-school counselors

A Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education committee on Tuesday approved a change that allows school districts to circumvent a requirement to provide one counselor for every 450 high-school students by using private vendors to perform some of the counselors' duties. Opposed by many school counselors, the measure was seen as a compromise to one introduced as part of a broader proposal by state Superintendent John White aimed at reducing state authority in preference to increased flexibility for local school districts.
