N.Y. lawmakers call for investigation of insulin pen reuse at VA facility

Lawmakers are asking the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs for an independent investigation of the Buffalo, N.Y., VA hospital after more than 700 patients were potentially exposed to serious bloodborne illnesses through the reuse of insulin pens at the facility. Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Brian Higgins, both New York Democrats, want to know why it took the VA two months to contact affected patients and why the practice continued for more than two years before it was noticed. The VA will answer questions through a call center it is setting up.
