Monitor very young sickle cell patients for development issues

A study in the journal Pediatrics found that lower scores on measures of adaptive and behavioral function can be seen in very young patients with sickle cell anemia. The identification of neurodevelopment issues warrants evaluation and interventions, researchers said. They also noted that hydroxyurea and transfusion therapy should be considered when sickle hemoglobinopathy is identified.
