The volume of rail carloads originated by U.S. railroads dropped 6.4% in the week ending Jan. 12 versus year-ago levels, but intermodal rose 10.4%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Of the 20 carload categories, 13 registered gains. Oil shipments posted a 47.7% increase year-on-year. North American chemical shipments also climbed 0.4%, AAR noted.
