Feds drop residential furnace-efficiency mandate

The Department of Energy has agreed to drop its rule requiring any new residential furnaces in Northern states to follow high efficiency standards. The move is in response to a 2011 lawsuit by the American Public Gas Association asking a federal court to stop the rule, which would have taken effect this spring. The department said it will go back to the drawing board to devise rules on how to regulate residential furnaces.
