How colleges are using GIS

GIS use on college campuses has expanded to include a wide range of academic disciplines, according to a study by the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science. "The list of departments and campus units reporting adoption and use of GIS included many new areas, including humanities, criminology and public health, in addition to the conventional and expected users," write Laxmi Ramasubramanian and Daniel W. Goldberg. Respondents to the survey indicated that GIS most commonly was used for spatial analysis or mapping, but that it also is being applied to purposes such as emergency preparedness.
