Mystery of Boeing 787 problems deepens

The problem that led to the grounding of Boeing 787 airliners has been traced to a powerful lithium ion battery that enables the plane to support much more electrical usage than other airliners and thus save weight. The fire this month on a Japan Airlines 787 in Boston, however, apparently was not the result of the battery exceeding its assigned voltage.
