Study cites increase in overdoses, deaths related to opioid painkillers

In three months of pharmacy files, researchers learned that 51 out of 9,940 patients had overdosed and six had died from taking opioid painkillers to manage back pain, arthritis and headache. Increasing opioid-related deaths and overdoses underscore the need for more risk assessment of the painkillers, experts said.
