Heartworm prevention should be administered every 30 days to dogs and cats year-round, regardless of geographic area, to protect the health of pets and their owners, writes veterinarian Karen Dye. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, most heartworm prevention protects pets from internal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms, which cause gastrointestinal problems in pets and pose a zoonotic risk to humans, Dr. Dye adds.
