Mediacom seeks FCC waiver to integrated set-top ban

Pledging to go all-digital by the Feb. 17, 2009, deadline, Mediacom Communications has requested an "emergency" waiver to the FCC's ban on integrated set-top boxes for cable systems in rural communities. "The waiver will enable Mediacom to implement an all-digital service in systems that, due to their technical, competitive and regulatory circumstances, could not otherwise be upgraded in a timely, economically feasible fashion and, indeed, might in some instances have to cease operations," the cable firm wrote in its Jan. 18 filing.
