GAO adds FDA to list of government's "high-risk" areas

The Government Accountability Office named the FDA among the federal government's "high-risk" areas, questioning the agency's ability to guarantee the safety of food, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. In its report, the GAO cited globalization, complexity of products and regulations as factors that hinder the FDA from performing its responsibilities. An FDA spokeswoman said ensuring the safety of such products "is among the highest priorities" of the agency.
