ComEd begins smart-grid deployment

Illinois-based Commonwealth Edison has commenced a $2.6 billion upgrade of its power infrastructure that it says will greatly enhance the utility's ability to respond to customer needs, boost energy efficiency and diagnose and fix problems when they arise. ComEd said customers' rates will initially increase about $3 per month to help pay for the work, but it is so confidant the investment will pay off for consumers in the long run that it has agreed to accept a financial penalty if it fails to deliver promised savings.
