RD: Patients with diabetes should be careful with flu drugs

People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes face a threefold increased risk of potentially fatal flu complications compared with those who do not have diabetes, the CDC has said. Cough syrups can contain 50% sugar, and some cold and flu medications contain alcohol, so patients with diabetes should opt for treatments that don't pose risks for their blood glucose levels, says Debra Spector, a registered dietitian and certified nutritionist.
