Firms use "crowdsourcing" for patent research

Some startups are performing patent research by "crowdsourcing" assignments to their networks of part-time engineers, academics and patent lawyers. One such company, Article One, pays up to $5,000 to part-timers who produce the best research. Microsoft and Sony are among the companies that have enlisted the help of research firms in order to combat so-called "patent trolls."
