Pentagon to allow women to serve in combat roles

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced plans to lift a 1994 ban that barred women from serving in "smaller ground combat units." The move could give women access to more elite jobs in the military. "The department's goal in rescinding the rule is to ensure that the mission is met with the best-qualified and most capable people, regardless of gender," Panetta said in a statement.
