A company called Deep Space Industries hopes to send robotic prospectors to the asteroid belt in search of valuable metals such as platinum. Subsequent missions would involve mining the valuable metals and returning them to Earth, perhaps for use in orbital manufacturing facilities. "In principle, mining asteroidal material could become economical within a few decades," one scientist says.
