Vt. lawmakers consider move to make reduced-price lunches free

Lawmakers in Vermont are considering legislation that would make it the first state to provide free meals for students who qualify for reduced-price meals. School nutrition professionals and advocates have backed the legislation, along with many lawmakers, who say the $300,000 price tag will be made up for with better academic performance and other benefits. Doug Davis, president of the School Nutrition Association of Vermont, said the change also will help remove stigma around subsidized school meals.
