Dermatologists weave together hair loss treatments

About half of women experience at least some hair loss by age 50, caused by autoimmune disorders, pregnancy, medications, menopause and vigorous hair styling, says dermatologic surgeon Ashley Curtis. With few treatments available, dermatologists must get creative in prescribing a patient-specific treatment. For example, dermatologic surgeon Melissa Babcock has prescribed blood-pressure reducers that also reduce the production of male hormones, as well as estrogen, oral contraceptives and a drug for male pattern baldness.
