Former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman and local officials toured Florida Power & Light's Turkey Point nuclear plant Wednesday and were told about the facility's security measures and environmental benefits. In the plant's simulation room, Whitman pressed the shutdown button and saw the redundant systems designed to avoid a situation like the Fukushima Daiichi incident. Mayor Steve Bateman of nearby Homestead, Fla., told Whitman, "The positive economic impact goes without saying. We couldn't ask for a better neighbor and partner. They are very much a member of the community."
