California farm interests call for voluntary safety compliance

Agriculture officials in California, stung by a recent outbreak of E. coli traced to vegetables grown there, hope to get the state's food handlers on board with a new initiative to improve the safety of locally grown products. The Department of Food and Agriculture, together with farm industry representatives, is calling for a voluntary program of compliance for the time being.
