U.S. consumer confidence reaches an 8-month high, index shows

U.S. consumer confidence increased from 53.3 in December to 60.6 this month, according to The Conference Board's index. The only higher reading since the official end of the recession came in May. A majority of respondents to The Conference Board's survey said they expect the job market to remain steady in the next six months.
