2012 smart grid spending trends upward to $13.9 billion

Worldwide spending on smart grids was up 7% last year to $13.9 billion, compared with the year before, mostly on the strength of China's expenditures on smart meters, Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates. The market research firm forecasts China will outspend the U.S. on smart grid technology in 2013.
