Bernanke: 12 of 13 major financial firms faced failure in 2008:

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission has released previously undisclosed notes from an interview with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other officials. Bernanke had said that 12 of the top 13 financial institutions in the U.S. were close to collapse in 2008 when the credit crisis was raging. The one major firm that Bernanke did not consider to be in danger was not disclosed. "If you look at the firms that came under pressure in that period ... only one ... was not at serious risk of failure," Bernanke told the FCIC. "Even Goldman Sachs, we thought there was a real chance that they would go under."
