Consumer prices in Japan slide for 10 straight months

Japan's consumer prices excluding fresh food dropped 1.3% in December compared with the same month in 2008, the statistics bureau said. Coming after a 1.7% fall in November, the data marked the 10th consecutive month of decline. Economic indicators in Japan are painting a mixed picture. Separate reports on December's economic activity show household spending up 2.1% and unemployment easing to 5.1%.
