Focus on resilience could combat depression, PTSD

Improving the physical and mental resilience of veterans returning from overseas deployment is a top issue as combat in Iraq and Afghanistan has wound down, writes Jeffrey Bland, president of the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Bland notes that a meeting at the Samueli Institute last week attracted an interdisciplinary group of military officers, stress researchers, trauma care experts and others who discussed the personal characteristics of resiliency and how programs should be personalized as service members adjust to re-entering home life.
