S&P assigns personal-lines insurers a negative outlook

Standard & Poor's gave personal-lines insurers a negative outlook for this year, saying they are poised to post underwriting losses for 2009. The rating agency "believes that significant investment portfolio and earnings declines have considerably dampened the operating performance and capitalization of some insurers -- predominantly those with meaningful life insurance operations."
