New guidelines cover drug abuse screening, newborn care

Increasing numbers of newborns suffering drug withdrawal symptoms led the American Academy of Pediatrics to update its treatment guidelines and call on hospitals to develop protocols for screening mothers for drug abuse. In some regions, up to 25% of NICU babies are treated for withdrawal, according to the co-author of the guidelines, which include updated steps for pain management in affected newborns.
