New types of check-in applications use GIS tools on phones to automatically "check in" as their owners travel from place to place. As users become more accustomed to location tools, battery-drain concerns may trump privacy worries with these new tools, writes Molly McHugh. "We want to collect, create, and share more and more content, with as little effort as possible. So while the geo-social segment has been plagued by mounting problems, this next generation of apps is quietly and innovatively finding the solutions," she adds.
