The Association of American Feed Control Officials determines the standards for pet food labels and prohibits the use of certain misleading terms on labels, writes veterinarian Lee Pickett. However, AAFCO has no power to regulate promotional materials, so terms such as "human grade" that have no meaning may still be used to promote a product, Dr. Pickett notes. The terms "organic" and "natural" do have official definitions, adds Dr. Pickett.
