New trend in consumer electronics spurs development of plastic materials

The trend toward smaller and lighter personal-computing devices is leading to the development of more advanced, stronger and lighter plastic materials. Styrolution, a partnership between BASF and Ineos, expects significant growth this year in high-impact polystyrene and ABS plastics. Bayer MaterialScience, meanwhile, is working on thermally conductive polymer materials as "use of polymer materials in electronic, computing and office devices will grow because these materials are ideal for devices that are slimmer and lighter weight," said Mike Shi of BMS.
