EPA: Power plants are predominant source of air emissions

Nationally, power plants emitted 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2011, of a total of 3.3 billion tons, the Environmental Protection Agency reported. In Pennsylvania, shale natural gas accounted for about 4% of air pollution from industrial facilities in 2011, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection. In-state drillers produced 16,542 tons of nitrogen oxide, compared with 142,749 tons from power plants, the report found.
