Editorial: Staged approach for used-fuel storage is vital

The federal government's plan for handling used nuclear fuel does not expect a geologic repository site to be built and opened for 35 years, and that's assuming there are locations that volunteer to be hosts, writes the editorial board of The Washington Post. "[C]onsumers financing a federal waste disposal fund through their electricity bills wonder what they've been paying for, and the federal government's financial liability for failing to collect the waste, already in the billions, continues to mount. The situation is safe enough, but it could be safer, and it's inexcusably expensive," the board writes.
