What caused the 34-minute blackout at the Super Bowl?

Entergy New Orleans, the company that supplies power to the Superdome, has issued a statement on the mid-game blackout during Sunday's Superbowl at the stadium. "A piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load sensed an abnormality in the system," the statement said. "Once the issue was detected, the sensing equipment operated as designed and opened a breaker, causing power to be partially cut to the Superdome in order to isolate the issue." However, what caused the abnormality is unclear. "No credit cards, vending machines shut down, everything shut down," said one fan.
